H. H. "Steam" Stewart knew Abner Doble and they socialized during Doble's trip to New Zealand during Doble's steam bus effort. Earlier, H.H. Stewart had followed the Doble Stock Swindle Trial and kept a series of newspaper articles from The Daily News detailing the case.
